James CARPENTER

February 8, 2012 at 7 p.m. at UTA’s Maverick Activities Center, 500 W. Nedderman Dr.

Presented with the School of Architecture, UTA

Glass is the most characteristic and telling material of modern architecture. And as a master in working with glass, James Carpenter helps bridge the gap between art and architecture. After RISD, he worked with Corning Glass Works on innovative products, and then in 1978 began his independent studio practice. A MacArthur Fellow and recipient of many major design awards, Carpenter created the exquisite moving glass screen in Dallas' Rachofsky House.

James Carpenter studied architecture and sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 1972. Mr. Carpenter actively exhibited his sculpture and installation film projects in the United States and Europe and worked from 1972 through 1982 as a consultant with Corning Glass Works in Corning, New York. He worked on the development of new glass materials including photo responsive glasses and various glass ceramics. These research projects were aimed at potential architectural applications that would utilize the unique technical capabilities of these glasses to control and manipulate light and information, and this work eventually brought him back to the practice of architecture itself. This emphasis on theoretical, aesthetic and industrial materials research, together with Mr. Carpenter’s ongoing practice in architecture and structural glass design, continues to inform and guide the work of James Carpenter Design Associates. Mr. Carpenter is the recipient of numerous awards including the National Environmental Design Award from the Smithsonian Institution, the American Institute of Architects Honor Award and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2004.

Since 1978, Mr. Carpenter has been working to develop independent and integrated building structures that have progressively synthesized art and architecture. The studio, James Carpenter Design Associates Inc., is a collaborative environment encouraging an exchange of ideas between architects, materials and structural engineers, environmental engineers and fabricators. The studio has developed unique architectural projects and structural designs employing glass, steel, wood and composites for a variety of works, including museums, university buildings, commercial office towers and cultural facilities. The emphasis of JCDA’s design leadership with such major projects as the redevelopment of the McKim Mead & White Farley Post Office as the new Pennsylvania Station in New York (2005); the planning and design of the renewed campus of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem (2005-2009), and the completion of the exterior and lobby of Seven World Trade Center (2001-2006) in New York has focused upon the transformation of the urban environment and public realm.

Curated by Jose Vargas

February 4-March 3, 2012

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 4, 2012 (7-9 PM)

The Bath House Cultural Center presents the 18th AnnualEl Corazón exhibition, a show that features diverse creations inspired by the heart (El Corazón), an important symbol in Mexican and Latin American art, and a significant theme in western culture.

When Jose Vargas, a visual artist and independent exhibition curator from Dallas, first saw a picture of a heart pierced by an arrow depicted with the number 27 and the wordsEl Corazón on the playing card of the Mexican game, Loteria, he knew that his next project would be related to such a powerful and inspiring symbol. After seeking and finding artists who were also fascinated by the aesthetics and cultural and artistic relevance of the heart, Mr. Vargas curated and presented their artwork in the first El Corazón exhibition in 1993 with great success. The show soon became an annual tradition and an extremely popular event for the Bath House Cultural Center and for the vast number of regional artists who have participated in this passionate and delightfully eclectic art show throughout the years.

2012 Artists:
ARTners Group, Kerian Babbitt-Massey, Awadh Baryoum, Carley Blackman, Angie Bolling, Eunice Bridges, Debbie Buie, Rebecca Collins, Liz Conrad, Ray-Mel Cornelius, Patricia Curry, Katrina Doran, Lori Dudley, Gina Marie Dunn, Brett Dyer, Jacque Forsher, Tyra Goodley, Cindy Gray, Rebecca Guy, Kimberly Harris, Hayden Harris, Anna Hernandez, Lizzett Herrera, Antoaneta Hillman, Suzan Kumar, Katrine Kyhnel, Joanna LaGrone-Headrick, Rachel E.

Naturally

Presented at the White Rock Lake Museum

February 4-May 2, 2012

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 4, 2012 (7-9 PM)

The White Rock Lake Museum presents Naturally, an exhibition of paintings inspired by nature by local artists, Brenda McKinney and Sunny Jacquet. The exhibition presents an inspiring collection of paintings that reflect with clarity the inherent attraction and admiration that the two artists have for the natural world. Even though the focus of each painter is about their interaction with nature, each artist interprets its meaning with a unique style and sensibility.

Brenda McKinney’s body of work explores the beauty and elements of nature. It is her view that the universe quietly invites one to engage in the natural ambiance becoming aware of the mystical splendor that nature has to reveal. With her art, she exposes the hidden secrets and natural wonders that lie unnoticed. Ms. McKinney explains that: “Without the visual concentration it is impossible to recognize the marvelous sensations of life that lie amongst us." She also states that: "Even though nature is viewed on a minute scale, my work is executed in a manner to force the viewer to acknowledge the presence of the extraordinary intertwined with a variety of color, shapes, and textures allowing one’s mind to interpret what is visible and become more connected to the nature.”

Sunny Jacquet explores a variety of movements of art while incorporating her very personal interpretation of the surreal. Her paintings are meticulously rendered and are representational of her fascination with pears and their symbolic meanings and with nature in general. She was born and raised in South Korea and immigrated to the U.S. in 1986 to pursue a couple of degrees in art. Her passion for travel has taken her to many countries, where she has experienced classic and modern art collections with reflection of different cultures and history. Recently, Ms. Jacquet was selected as of the New Dallas Nine, a distinguished decoration in the field of visual art awarded by D Magazine to artists who demonstrate extraordinary talent and commitment.

Enrique Fernández Cervantes, Curator of Exhibitions for the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, curated this exhibition.

This "Beautiful Woman Book" is a tactile experience that will delight the senses as you peel through its layers.
