Southwestern Watercolor Society presents a JANET WALSH Workshop

Strong design and negative painting, the focus of Janet Walsh’s workshop

A Janet Walsh workshop offers a unique opportunity for beginners as well as advanced painters to grow as artists. Watercolor and still life are used as “tools” to enter into the creative process.

She begins the process each day with “warm-up” exercises, which provide an opportunityto become centered and to open creative blocks.

Using common objects and architecture as “live models”, she shares the thought processes that go into creating a setup. Continuing with a “hands on” approach, she guides students to consider value, shape, size, color, rhythm and composition in setting up their own individual scenes.

Individual help ensures that each artist can accomplish what they want and encourages the individuality of each person’s artistic vision.

Janet will also give a free demonstration at the SWS meeting on April 11 at 7pm. Visitors are welcome. For directions, see the SWS website: swswatercolor.org.

To register for her workshop, contact Mary Treadwell at mary@treadwell.biz. A $50 deposit will hold your place.

Chapter 7 of the Kelley Memoirs can be accessed here.
Beginning excerpt: When I first came to Dallas it seems that virtually everyone involved with the fine arts were sincere and dedicated to both bringing the best to Dallas and nurturing the indigenous talent. During my visit to Rome in 1957 Emma Exline told me of a young man named Lawrence V. Kelly. She said he had studied Dallas’ art scene and thought it to be the most likely city for a brand new opera company. Kelly, Italian-American conductor Nicola Rescigno and Carol Fox had founded the Lyric Opera of Chicago just three years earlier. Fox eventually had a falling out with Larry and Rescigno, leaving the latter two to put on the first Dallas show which featured mega-star Maria Callas. The opera world’s eyes or rather ears were definitely on Dallas. Larry Kelly didn’t stop there, he produced “Alcina.”

Chapter 8 of the Kelley Memoirs is now availble here.
Beginning excerpt: I expect that most people reading this are familiar with the life histories of artists like Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt, Monet and Jackson Pollock. As in other professions an artist’s stature outside of the professional community, in addition to how the artist is perceived by the art community, can tell us more about them as individuals and artists as well as the cultural sophistication of the community in which they flourished. At a 2010 art and law colloquium led by Megan Carpenter (Associate Professor of Law and Director for the Center for Law and Intellectual Property at Texas Wesleyan School of Law, Texas Wesleyan College), I was introduced to one of the lawyer/panelists by Patricia Meadows of the family of Algur H. Meadows. Algur was a major supporter of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts (since renamed Dallas Museum of Art), Southern Methodist University’s art department and the Meadows Museum. Patricia Meadows explained that, “When I was a young art student and later young matron, Chapman was THE artist whose work everyone collected, THE art teacher, and owner of THE art gallery.”

“Hard Candy Christmas” and “Freedom” by James Haddock

Join SWA on Monday, Feb 20th for a demonstration by Randy Meador. The pictured piece (left) was his entry last year in the SWA International. Fort Worth artist Randy Meador has a problem, a good problem. Most of his paintings are sold before he begins them. Since selling his business in 2007 to become a fulltime artist and author, Meador’s stock continues to rise and sales continue to increase.

The recipient of many awards, including the current 2011-2012 Texas Watercolorist of the Year, he feels his true reward is seeing his creations in the homes and offices of his clients. He says, “That’s where they belong; it’s why they were born.”

Meador just completed his first one man show. His work can be found in several western art publications.

He uses humor and candor to effectively communicate to groups of artists or art collectors.

Everything has a vibration. You can't see or touch it, but you know it's there. It’s instinctively or intuitively sensed. For example, you have a favorite color and wear it often because it makes you feel good. Why?Because, it too has a vibration, an energy that you are instinctively drawn to. Each color gives something, does something for you. But until now, you may not have been aware of it. As a designer, in designing jewelry a natural stone, as opposed to one that dyed, also has a stronger vibration. After all, they have the minerals of the earth within them because that's what created the coloration of them. Any time you identify with a stone or color and what it can do for you, that in itself is a building process and what you are building is a more balanced, happier you. The cells of your body will attune and respond to it. Please understand that the stones and colors cannot do it alone. When you de! cide to become more balanced, happier and flowing, the stones and colors will enhance it.

As you will grow spiritually you will learn to use your magnetic will wisely rather than your forceful will. A wise will is one that does things with thought, planning, and intention. It thinks of better ways than force to do things.

CLIQUE, Custom Jewelry & Fine Art Gallery, requests submissions from area artists working in any media of paintings/print making, (Digital Art), glass, sculpture, photography or jewelry (men/women) to be considered for inclusion in

Pollock Gallery: A Shower of Forms: Works on Paper by Robert Moskowitz

New York artist Robert Moskowitz is widely known as a prominent figure in the New Image Painters, a group of artists named after the 1978 Whitney exhibition that marked a return to an overt figurative style in painting after the conceptual periods of Minimalism, performance and installation. This exhibition will present a selection of drawings and small paintings on paper in which reductive silhouettes of subjects such as birds, a smokestack and the Empire State Building are contrasted against the immensity of open skies, interrupted by bursts of spray paint.

Jock Sturges: Image Presentation and Artist Talk

    March 8, 7 PM

Richland College is pleased to present renowned photographer Jock Sturges at 7 p.m. on March 8 in Fannin Performance Hall.

Richland College continues its commitment to excellence in photography by bringing world-class photographers to campus to interact with students over the course of a day concluding with a free public lecture, reception and book-signing. Past participants in this distinguished series include Ralph GibsonMary Ellen MarkJerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor, Joyce Tenneson, Keith Carter, and Arno Minkkinen. Sturges, known for his sublime photographs of the female nude, will address ideas of beauty and biography in art. This presentation will contain images that may not be suitable for younger or more sensitive audiences.

Sturges’ talk at Richland College will draw on the wider cultural and academic context of his photography, grounding his work in the history of art, while delving into his interests in perceptual psychology and anthropology. For Sturges, it is important to understand, “how vital it is for aspiring artists in any medium to be well and broadly educated in art history specifically and in all culture more generally.”

Sturges, a highly published and exhibited photographer, received his BFA from Marlboro College in 1974 and his MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1985. Currently he is working as a fine art photographer in California, Washington state, Ireland, The Netherlands, and the Atlantic coast of France. He is also a commercial freelance photographer specializing in fashion and classical dance and a contributing editor to various photography magazines. Locally, he had a solo exhibition at Photographs Do Not Bend in Dallas in 2001. His most recent monograph, Notes, as well his earlier acclaimed books, The Last Days of Summer andRadiant Identities, will be available for sale at the book signing.
